Instapower: How to Install Flood Lights? A Step-by-Step Guide

 

Lighting up an ample outdoor space—be it a driveway, a factory facade, or a back garden—requires powerful, focused illumination. This is the job of the floodlights. Switching to efficient LED flood lights, like the advanced models from Instapower, is an excellent investment.

 

​Installing a professional-grade LED flood lights with a sensor requires attention to Safety and detail. This guide breaks down the process into clear, manageable steps, ensuring your new fixture illuminates exactly where you need it most.

​Step 1: Installation Safety & Planning

 

​Before you touch any wiring, preparation is crucial. A successful installation is a safe installation.

 

​⚠️ Safety First: Shut Off Power

 

​This is non-negotiable. Locate your main circuit breaker box (fuse box) and switch off the power to the circuit you’ll be working on. Use a non-contact voltage tester to double-check that the wires at the installation site are completely dead before proceeding.

 

​Choose Your Spot & Height

 

Placement: Identify the area that requires the most coverage. Common spots are above garage doors, on perimeter walls, or high on poles for large-area lighting.

 

Optimal Height: For general security and illumination, mount the light 8 to 15 feet above the ground. This height minimizes glare into people's eyes while providing wide coverage and reducing shadows where intruders might hide.

 

Check the Fixture: Ensure your Instapower fixture has a suitable IP Rating (e.g., IP65 or IP66) to confirm it's sealed against dust and powerful water jets.

 

​Step 2: Mounting the Flood Light Fixture

 

​Once the power is off and your location is chosen, you can secure the physical light unit.

 

Detach the Bracket: Unscrew the mounting bracket from the main floodlight body. Keep the screws safe.

 

Mark the Holes: Hold the bracket against the wall or mounting surface (masonry, wood, or metal). Use a level to ensure it is perfectly straight, then mark the positions of the mounting holes with a pencil.

​Drill & Anchor: Drill pilot holes in the marked spots. Use the appropriate bit for your surface:

 

​For wood, screws can usually be driven in directly.

 

​For brick or concrete, use a masonry drill bit and insert wall plugs (anchors) provided with the fixture.

 

Secure the Bracket: Screw the bracket firmly into the wall. Ensure it is stable and can easily support the weight of the LED flood light unit (Instapower fixtures are typically made from robust, yet manageable, die-cast aluminum).

 

Re-Attach the Light: Screw the main light body back onto the secured bracket. Keep the connection points loose enough for adjustment later, but tight enough to hold the light in place.

 

​Step 3: Wiring and Connections

 

​This is the most critical step and should be done with extreme care. If you are not familiar with electrical wiring, call a qualified electrician.

 

Prepare the Wires: If you are connecting to an existing junction box, carefully pull the pre-existing wires out. Strip the insulation off the new flood light's wires if the ends aren't already exposed.

 

Match the Polarity: Connect the light's wires to the power source's wires (typically inside an IP-rated junction box or weatherproof receptacle). Use wire nuts or appropriate connectors to secure the join. Follow the standard color code:

 

 

​Green/Yellow (or Bare Copper) ➡️ Earth/Ground (E)

​Brown (or Black) ➡️ Live (L)

​Blue (or White) ➡️ Neutral (N)

 

Note: For all outdoor installations, the power source should ideally be protected by a GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter) to prevent electrical hazards if moisture gets in.

 

Seal the Box: Carefully tuck all connections inside the junction box. If mounting directly to a wall, ensure you apply weatherproof silicone sealant around the edges of the bracket where it meets the wall to prevent water intrusion.

 

​Step 4: Testing and Final Adjustment

 

​With the fixture secured and wired, you can finalize the installation.

​Restore Power: Return to the circuit breaker and switch power back on.

 

Test Functionality: Check that the light turns on. If your Instapower model includes a motion sensor, test its range and sensitivity, adjusting the settings (time duration, LUX level) as per the instruction manual.

 

Adjust the Angle: Adjust the bracket and light head to achieve optimal illumination. Aim the beam to cover the desired area without shining directly into neighboring homes or the street (this is called "light trespass"). A slight downward angle is usually best for maximizing ground coverage.

 

Tighten Securely: Once the light is aimed correctly, firmly tighten all screws on the mounting bracket and the lamp head to lock the position against wind and vibration. Your new LED flood light is now ready for years of service!
